A rare astronomical phenomenon over the Kaaba
A rare astronomical phenomenon over the Kaaba

The Holy Kaaba in Makkah witnessed, this afternoon, the passage of the sun and with it it became one and the same, registering the disappearance of the shadow of the Kaaba, according to the official "SPA" agency.

The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Majid Abu Zahra, said: “The images captured by the perpendicularity of the sun today at noon showed the accuracy of astronomical calculations in determining the position of the sun in the dome of the sky and knowing the exact time of this phenomenon with an accuracy no less than modern smart phone applications used to determine the direction of the qiblah.”

He explained that the perpendicularity of the sun over the Holy Kaaba is due to the tilt of the Earth's axis at an angle of 23.5 degrees, which in turn leads to the apparent transition of the sun between the orbits of Cancer to the north and Capricorn to the south through the equator during the rotation of the earth around the sun once a year.

He stated that areas located in latitudes less than 23.5 degrees north and south all witness this event twice a year, but at different times depending on the latitude of that place and are characterized by few places of the globe, which are confined between the equator and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

It is noteworthy that the first perpendicular occurred today during the apparent movement of the sun and its transition from the equator to the Tropic of Cancer, and the sun will return and perpendicular again to the Holy Kaaba with its return coming from the Tropic of Cancer heading south to the equator next July.
