Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, has announced that she and a group of lawmakers will reduce their wages by 20% over the next six months in solidarity with those affected by the outbreak of the new Coruna virus.

According to CNBC, Jacinda told a news conference on Wednesday about the pandemic in New Zealand that, along with New Zealand government ministers and public service executives, they will cut their salaries.

She added that this is in solidarity with citizens who depend on wage subsidies, whose wages have been reduced, and who have lost their jobs as a result of the global epidemic. She admitted that while this measure in and of itself would not change the financial position of the government, it is about showing leadership.

Jacinda's annual salary is 470,000 NZ dollars (281,000 US dollars), according to the New Zealand Rewards Authority, which decides to pay for key positions in the country. The reduction is equivalent to NZ $ 47,105.

According to the latest data, 1,400 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in New Zealand and 9 deaths from the virus, while 770 have recovered. The government announced the country's general closure earlier.
